Gary Brecka, human biologist and host of The Ultimate Human podcast, has described hydrogen water as one of his favorite wellness practices.
After appearing on The Joe Rogan Experience, his views on molecular hydrogen reached millions of people and sparked widespread interest in hydrogen water as a daily wellness routine.
Here is what Brecka says about hydrogen water, what current research shows, and how you can try it for yourself.
What Gary Brecka says about hydrogen water
On Joe Rogan Experience episode 2304, Brecka described hydrogen water as one of his top daily wellness habits. He explained why molecular hydrogen stands apart from many traditional antioxidants:
“Hydrogen is the lightest and most prevalent element in the universe. It makes up around 10 percent of your body weight.”
Brecka has also discussed molecular hydrogen’s selective antioxidant properties, particularly regarding hydroxyl radicals and oxidative stress.
He has pointed to a six-month clinical study in which older adults drinking hydrogen water experienced increases in telomere length.
At the same time, the control group saw declines over the same period. The study also reported improvements in cognitive scores, circulation, and inflammatory markers, including C-reactive protein.
Across his podcast and social content, Brecka frequently highlights these areas of interest surrounding molecular hydrogen:
-
Selective antioxidant activity related to oxidative stress
-
Potential support for cellular health and recovery
-
Ability to cross cell membranes because of its extremely small molecular size
-
Ongoing research involving cognitive function, circulation, and exercise recovery
Why molecular hydrogen is different from other antioxidants
Most antioxidants, including vitamin C and glutathione, are relatively large molecules. Molecular hydrogen (H2) is the smallest molecule in existence, which researchers believe may allow it to diffuse rapidly throughout the body and across cell membranes.
Brecka argues that this gives molecular hydrogen unique properties compared to larger antioxidant compounds, particularly because of where it may be able to travel in the body.
How to try hydrogen water
There are two main ways people add molecular hydrogen to their daily routine.
Hydrogen tablets
Hydrogen tablets are one of the most accessible and cost-effective options. Drop a tablet into a glass of water, let it dissolve, and drink within a few minutes while the hydrogen concentration is highest. Tablets are portable, consistent, and easy to use.
Vital Reaction molecular hydrogen tablets produce 8 to 10 PPM of dissolved hydrogen per serving. Each tablet uses magnesium to generate molecular hydrogen gas without artificial additives.

Hydrogen water bottles
A hydrogen water bottle uses electrolysis to infuse water with molecular hydrogen on demand. You fill it, run a generation cycle for a few minutes, and drink. Bottles are a convenient option for generating hydrogen water at home or on the go.
The AquaAura Zen 2 generates hydrogen-rich water in 5 minutes using SPE and PEM technology, producing over 2500 PPB of dissolved hydrogen per cycle. It is IP67 waterproof and FDA and CE certified.

What does the research say?
Research on molecular hydrogen is still developing, and many studies to date are relatively small or preliminary. The telomere study Brecka referenced on Joe Rogan was published in a peer-reviewed journal, but it was a pilot trial. Larger and longer-term studies are still needed.
That said, there are more than 1,000 peer-reviewed publications exploring molecular hydrogen across a wide range of wellness and research applications.
Current research suggests molecular hydrogen is generally well tolerated and may have antioxidant-related applications that continue to be studied.

Frequently asked questions
Does Gary Brecka recommend hydrogen water?
Yes. Gary Brecka has described hydrogen water as one of his favorite wellness practices, including on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast. He has discussed using it as part of his daily routine.
What hydrogen water does Gary Brecka use?
On the Joe Rogan Experience, Brecka discussed hydrogen tablets as a preferred delivery method, describing them as accessible and cost-effective.
What does Gary Brecka say hydrogen water does?
Brecka says molecular hydrogen has selective antioxidant properties and that its small molecular size may allow it to reach areas of the body that larger antioxidant compounds may not reach as efficiently.
Is hydrogen water actually backed by science?
There are more than 1,000 peer-reviewed publications involving molecular hydrogen. While much of the research is still early-stage, existing studies continue exploring its antioxidant and wellness-related applications.
How much hydrogen water should you drink per day?
Many people start with 1 to 2 glasses per day and adjust based on their routine and hydration preferences. See our full dosage guide for more details on how much hydrogen water you should drink per day.
