Is it dangerous to breathe hydrogen?


You may be familiar with hydrogen water or have heard of a hydrogen water generator. While hydrogen water is definitely a popular way to consume hydrogen, breathing hydrogen with a hydrogen inhaler is another common mechanism of delivery. Hydrogen gas is a powerful cell signalling molecule with potent anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Inhaling hydrogen gas with a hydrogen therapy machine allows this powerful molecule to rapidly disperse throughout your body, and is being widely studied for the treatment of a variety of health conditions.


Inhaled hydrogen has been shown to have numerous health benefits, and has been shown to be generally safe in a large number of human and animal studies. In fact, hydrogen has been granted GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) status by the FDA, and in studies going back to the 1940s, no toxic effects of hydrogen consumption have ever been reported.


Hydrogen is all natural- in fact we make (actually the bacteria in our gut make) up to 10L of hydrogen gas per day in our colon. This is one of the reasons that hydrogen therapy is so effective- we’re already wired to recognize it at a cellular level.


However, not all hydrogen inhalation devices are created equal. Is your hydrogen machine safe?

Miz hydrogen inhalers are carefully calibrated to maintain relatively low outputs of hydrogen. Our units will produce anywhere from 2-6% hydrogen, depending on the model. The machines have an internal sensor that maintains a hydrogen concentration of less than 10%.

recent study from the Journal of Medical Gas Research demonstratedhydrogen inhalation machines producing greater than 10% hydrogen gas pose a serious risk of explosion. A concentration greater than 15% hydrogen produced an explosion that would cause “severe damage to a user” according to the study.

As you can see, literally every inhaler manufacturer on the market except for Miz is producing machines that generate unsafe concentrations of hydrogen gas. Only Miz designs hydrogen inhalation devices carefully calibrated to maintain safe levels of hydrogen gas, well below the 10% threshold.


This is critically important, as hydrogen can even be ignited by static electricity in the air. Experts believe that static electricity led to the fatefulHindenburg disaster.  


Many machines on the market advertise 99% hydrogen gas! And many of the machines on the above list produce a combination of hydrogen AND oxygen. The only thing more explosive than high concentrations of hydrogen by itself is high concentrations of hydrogen mixed with oxygen. 


Why do these companies sell these high output machines? More hydrogen must be better, right? 




Studies have shown that beyond a certain point, more hydrogen is not better. There is no benefit to consuming 99% hydrogen vs. 5% hydrogen, for example. Instead, what matters is dosefrequency. Better to use a lower percentage device more frequently, than to use a high output device at all. 


Peak tissue saturation is achieved with our clinical model within 30 minutes- there are no benefits to adding more hydrogen once the tissues are already saturated.


The real reason that these companies are selling high output hydrogen devices is because they’re much less expensive to make. Many of these are actually refurbished welding devices. Seriously. They just replace the igniter with a breathing apparatus.  


If you are purchasing one of these high output hydrogen devices for your home or clinic, consult with your insurance provider. These machines are hazardous and pose a high liability risk.


Additionally, with these high output hydrogen inhalation machines, there is a potential for asphyxiation due to insufficient oxygen levels. If you’re breathing 99% hydrogen, then there’s very little oxygen in the air you’re breathing.
