So what is hydrogen water?
Hydrogen water is your everyday water enriched with molecular hydrogen (H2).
You might be thinking, doesn't water inherently contain hydrogen?
Well, yes, but there's a twist.
Water, or H2O, is composed of two hydrogen atoms bonded to one oxygen atom. So, yes it does contain hydrogen, but not a form that ignites the body.
To reap the health benefits associated with molecular hydrogen, we need to separate it from the attached oxygen. This is achieved through a process called electrolysis where an electrical current is applied, slicing the two elements in half.
The molecular hydrogen gas then gets dissolved into the water like sugar in coffee, while the oxygen is released into the atmosphere.

Another method involves reacting magnesium with water to release hydrogen gas, which dissolves in the water. The presence of additional hydrogen, which is a powerful antioxidant, is what differentiates hydrogen water from regular tap or bottled water.
Hydrogen water is touted for its antioxidant properties, which are believed to reduce oxidative stress, a contributor to inflammatory diseases, aging, and chronic disruption in the body. Hydrogen water is generally considered safe as hydrogen is a naturally occurring, non-toxic substance. It’s also a substance produced naturally from gut bacteria. There have been no known contraindications or reported risks specific to pregnant women and children. However, as with any change in diet or introduction of supplements, it is advisable for pregnant women, nursing mothers, and parents of young children to consult with a healthcare provider before adding hydrogen water to their daily routine.
