Defining H2, ORP, and pH

If you’re familiar with alkaline water you’ve probably heard or seen an ORP meter.

And you’ve probably seen a demonstration showing a negative ORP reading and how this reading means additional antioxidant power.

While normal drinking water will result in a positive reading, when hydrogen is dissolved in the same water it can trigger a negative value.

But does a negative ORP reading actually mean?

  • It doesn’t mean the water contains an electrical charge. Water must remain neutral because positive and negative ions must balance themselves out.
  • It doesn’t mean the water has free electrons. Yes, during electrolysis, the cathode adds electrons to the water. But they immediately bond with H+ ions (protons) to form H2 atoms which then pair-up to make H2 gas.
  • It doesn’t tell you hydrogen concentration. pH is typically the main factor influencing ORP readings not dissolved hydrogen (H2).
  • Small concentrations of dissolved H2 (too low for any benefit) can produce a negative ORP depending on the pH of the water.
  • More H2 in the water does not increase negative ORP. In fact, if the pH is already acidic before testing, there could be less hydrogen than you may realize.
  • H2 does not work like typical antioxidants that scavenge free-radicals. Hydrogen works using “signal modulation” which is a fancy way of saying it activates the body. This means ORP doesn’t give you the full picture of hydrogen antioxidant capabilities.

The good news is…

You can measure dissolved hydrogen using an inexpensive reagent like the infamous H2 Blue drops.

Here’s how they work:

  1. Pour the hydrogen water sample you want to measure (6 mL) into a small glass.
  2. Start adding drops until the water turns from clear to blue.
  3. While you’re going through this process, you’ll count every drop added.
  4. Once you know the total drop to turn the water blue you’ll use the following formula to calculate the H2 PPM concentration: Number of drops X 0.1 = PPM

Example: 20 drop equals 2 PPM

  • Verify the electrodes are platinum, not stainless steel.
